There are a number of groups researching UK ladybirds which would be an excellent model for investigating the topics I describe above. This includes involving the general public in surveying as well as specialist researchers in sample analysis. It could include researchers at Universities, research institutes as well as amateur naturalists, school children, gardeners and so on.
