Firms call for major R&I investment to tackle environmental crisis

Major investment into research and innovation (R&I) is needed to enable UK businesses to address the global biodiversity and climate crisis, according to a new report.

The report by the Valuing Nature Programme ­­– which brings together businesses, research institutions, government agencies and NGOs - is based on feedback from 200 organisations across all these sectors, half of which were UK firms.

Funding Call: Sustainable Management of UK Marine Resources

The Sustainable Management of UK Marine Resources Programme (SMMR) is a new £12.4m programme funded through UKRI Strategic Priorities Fund. SMMR will be jointly delivered by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) on behalf of UKRI, and in partnership with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and Marine Scotland. The SMMR Champions are Professor David Paterson & Dr Mark James (St Andrews University).

Strategic Priorities Fund: Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Food Systems

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) in partnership with government are pleased to announce a £5 million call to support one Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) focused on developing the next generation of interdisciplinary food systems thinkers. This CDT is part of a wider £47.5 million interdisciplinary research programme seeking to transform the UK food system and is led by the Global Food Security Programme (GFS) and supported by UKRI’s Strategic Priorities Fund (SPF). The call is administered by BBSRC, in partnership with ESRC, MRC, NERC, Defra, DHSC, PHE, Innovate UK and FSA.


POST fellowship call on sustainable land management - apply by 19th Jan

POST (Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology) is conducting a review of the available evidence on sustainable land use and land management measures in the academic and grey literature, informed by the opinions of key experts in relevant areas, such as ecosystem services, agriculture and sustainable development. To carry out the project, UK Parliament is looking for an academic with a research background that either relates to environmental sustainability issues, landscape ecology/management, ecosystem services and/or planning. Closing date 19th January 2020. 


BES Horizon Scan - submit your ideas

The British Ecological Society will be conducting a horizon scanning exercise of emerging issues under the broad theme of the values of nature to inform the future research agenda.
