Special Issue of the journal Ecosystem Services on 'Shared, Plural and Cultural values’

A Special Issue on ‘Shared, Plural and Cultural Values’ has been published in the interdisciplinary journal Ecosystem Services, bringing together 15 publications presenting cutting edge theory and methodology building on work in VNN, the UK National Ecosystem Assessment and it’s follow on. The issue is currently freely accessible, and was edited by Dr Jasper Kenter (Scottish Association for Marine Science). 

BBSRC Call: Understanding the challenge of resistance in agriculture

BBSRC is launching a call for applications to understand how agricultural pests and diseases become resistant to the agents currently used to control them.

The problem of resistance to antibiotics is well documented. Recently, doctors in the US were unable to save the life of a woman who had an infection caused by a bacterium which was resistant to all available antibiotics. The future has the potential to become a ‘post-antibiotic era’ unless new drugs are developed or ways are found to overcome resistance in bacteria.

National Trust research strategy 2017 – 2021 published

The new National Trust research strategy has been published. It includes exploring new opportunities with UK Research Councils and interest in areas relevant to the Valuing Nature Programme, such as increasing understanding of the best ways to measure the value of local heritage and parks, including natural capital.

Report highlights potential impact of environmental tipping points on food system

The Global Food Security (GFS) programme has published a new report providing evidence for the existence of environmental tipping points and exploring the potential consequences for global food security.

The report ‘Environmental tipping points and food system dynamics’ was unveiled at a Parliamentary event held Wednesday 11 January attended by MPs, policy-makers, leading industry figures, researchers and funding agencies.

Opportunity: Green Infrastructure Knowledge Exchange Fellowship

The Natural Environment Research Council is inviting proposals for a Knowledge Exchange Fellowship on urban green infrastructure.  The aim of the role is to increase the impact of NERC funded research by working with end users such as planners and landscape architects.  The work could be for the UK or developing economies.  

The closing date for applications is 27 April 2017.

New report: Nature-based solutions to climate change mitigation and adaptation in urban areas

The report is available here.

It comprises latest scientific findings on selected aspects of the topic (literature review). In addition, results of a European Expert Workshop in preparation of the European BfN/ENCA conference on "Nature-based solutions to climate change in urban areas and their rural surroundings" are presented. The report is a complement to the conference proceedings, which will be published at the beginning of next year.
