2019 Horizon Scan of Emerging Issues for Global Conservation and Biological Diversity

Opportunity from the Valuing Nature Programme Coordination Team (PCT) to participate in the 2019 Horizon Scan of global environmental issues.

This undertaking, which first started in 2008 aims to identify emerging issues for global conservation and biodiversity.  The paper from the 2018 exercise can be found here.

If you want to participate in this exercise, please provide us no later than 8 June 17:00 with a topic title and justification using this webform.

The objective of the 2019 Horizon Scan is to identify emerging topics that are not yet widely known or understood in the conservation community but that could have substantial effects on biological diversity worldwide in the medium to long term.

The aim of recognising such emerging topics is to focus attention and stimulate debate about these subjects, potentially leading to new research foci, policy developments, or business innovations.

It is important that issues are not well known, and have not been submitted before. It is also key that issues are precisely defined in their title. Issues must be novel, and the implications for the environment must be clear. The list of past topics can be found here.

We invite you to submit topics that you find particularly relevant for this exercise, together with short a justification (200 words max.) explaining

  1. The novelty of the issue;
  2. Why this topic is important at a global scale, and
  3. To what extent it represents an opportunity or a risk;

We recommend that you add notes and links not intended for publication to your paragraph (e.g. websites describing the issue, notes about its importance or concerns about its suitability).

If you want to participate in this exercise, please provide us no later than 8 June 17:00 with a topic title and justification using this webform.

Your suggestion will be reviewed by the PCT and submitted to the Horizon Scanning 2019 panel for consideration. If the topic you suggest is selected among the final list of top emerging issues, you will be acknowledged as the source of this topic.
