NIHR accepting proposals to research 'green' and 'blue' spaces

Outdoor green and blue spaces

The National Institute for Health Research's (NIHR) Public Health Research Programme wishes to commission research on the effectiveness* of interventions to promote health and wellbeing, and reduce inequalities, in outdoor “green” and “blue” spaces.

Proposals must:

  • evaluate interventions with the potential for wider future application to build evidence for local decision makers
  • have a primary health outcome and may evaluate multi-component interventions.

Natural experiments are of interest, including the health impacts of enhancement or loss of green and blue spaces.

The call has direct links to the Valuing Nature's Health & Wellbeing goal in which we seek to improve our understanding of the value of the UK's natural environment for human health (physical and mental) and wellbeing.

The deadline to apply is August 15th, 2016 (13:00). For further information or to apply, please go to the NIHR website

*‘Effectiveness’ in this context relates not only to the size of the effect, but it also takes into account any harmful or negative side effects, including inequitable outcomes
